American Heart Month
Every year since 1963 the US since Congress has required the president to proclaim February “American Heart Month.” This year is no different and now is a great time to help keep your heart healthy by getting some of the recommended physical exercise through skiing.
Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and most Americans are not physically active enough to gain any health benefits. Swimming, cycling, jogging, aerobic dancing, walking or many other activities can help your heart; And since we are in the middle of the winter season skiing and snowboarding can be on top of that list. Whether skiing is a part of your daily routine or it’s included in a structured seasonal exercise program, all physical activity adds up to a healthier heart.
Just think how much better you feel after a full day of playing in the snow, and to think it’s also good for your health. According to the latest joint American Heart Association/American College of Sports Medicine guidelines on physical activity, all healthy adults ages 18-65 should be getting at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity five days of the week. However, there are additional guidelines for those 65 and older, or for those 50-64 with chronic conditions or physical functional limitations (e.g., arthritis) that affect movement ability or physical fitness, so check with your physician before starting any new exercise program or sport. Come join us on the slopes and keep your heart healthy.
