Better Skiing: Nutrition

Welcome to this edition of Better Skiing, I’m Bruce Ruff.
Do you get cold when skiing? Sometimes what you put in your body is as important as what you put on your body. Body heat comes from what you eat. When you are active, you burn calories, and that produces heat.

So what are the best foods to eat to fuel your muscles and to keep you warm? Well, it may not be exactly what you think. Believe it or not, you need some fat in your diet!
Carbohydrates burn quickly and if you rely on them alone you’ll constantly have to refuel. Fats on the other hand, burn long and slow so they last throughout the day.
The muscles you use in skiing require you to replace energy as you burn it to work efficiently. The best way to fuel your system and to stay warm is a balance of 40% Carbs, 30% Protein, and 30% Fat. So at breakfast, go for the pancakes and bacon, not just the plain bagel. Just don’t over do it or you’ll roll down the hill.
