Better Skiing: Layering Clothes
Happy New Year everyone and welcome to this edition of Better Skiing, I’m Bruce Ruff.
Knowing how to dress for cold weather can be critical to your comfort on the mountain. Layering your clothes is the best way to protect yourself from the elements outside.
Everyone handles the cold differently but the key is to wick moisture away from the body to stay dry and at the same time hold in enough body heat to protect you from the cold. If you layer correctly beneath a waterproof breathable outer shell, you won’t become damp or cold. Here is how to layer properly:
-Your first layer, which is next to the skin, should be a synthetic fiber that wicks moisture away from your skin.
-Next should be an insulated layer such as polyester fleece or wool. This will maintain your body heat.
-Your outer layer should be a waterproof breathable fabric. This will keep water out and let perspiration out from the inside. This keeps you dry and protects you from the wind and cold.
When you’re warm on the inside, playing in the cold outside is much more enjoyable.
