Better Skiing: Dropping In

Welcome to this edition of Better Skiing, I’m Bruce Ruff.
Are you one of those skiers who can handle steep terrain yet will avoid a run because it starts with a cornice drop? Does a 10-foot drop scare you away from great snow? First, don’t let your head screw up your skiing. You have the skills.

All you have to do is set up at the top of the drop with your skis at a 45 degree angle to the cornice. Focus on the landing area. Keep your hands out in front and stay centered on your skis. Do not lean back. Be prepared to land with legs extended and immediately absorb with both legs the impact when your skis touch down. If you’re going to make a mistake, make it to the uphill side. This way you can hip check to regain your balance. If you land centered you can start your first turn. If not, stop and regroup, then dive into the fall line. Now, steep chute skiing and great snow will be accessible to you, even if it starts with a drop.
