Better Skiing: Avalanches
Welcome to this edition of Better Skiing, I’m Bruce Ruff.
No where else in the U.S. are avalanches more deadly than in Colorado. Avalanches do not discriminate – they kill skiers and snowboarders, experts and novices. Taking risks in the backcountry can have its rewards but good judgement can minimize those risks.
Take an avalanche class to increase your knowledge and reduce your risk in the backcountry. Classes will teach you how to recognize and overcome mistakes people make in the backcountry. They will teach you to recognize trouble terrain and signs of snow pack weakness. They will also teach you how to use beacons, probes and slope meters. All these are necessary equipment to travel safely in the backcountry. Don’t become a statistic! Travel with people who are skilled in the backcountry – your life could depend on them.
Know before you go! We are fortunate to have an Avalanche Hotline updated daily. Call the Colorado Avalanche information center at 970-668-0600 for current conditions.
