Better Skiing: Dropping In

Welcome to this edition of Better Skiing, I’m Bruce Ruff.
Are you one of those skiers who can handle steep terrain yet will avoid a run because it starts with a cornice drop? Does a 10-foot drop scare you away from great snow? First, don’t let your head screw up your skiing. You have the skills.

Better Skiing: Footbeds

Welcome to this edition of Better Skiing, I’m Bruce Ruff.
There are a lot of ski shops promoting custom footbeds. Are they necessary and do they help you ski better? They answer is yes! That’s why you hear so much about them.

Better Skiing: Avalanches

Welcome to this edition of Better Skiing, I’m Bruce Ruff.
No where else in the U.S. are avalanches more deadly than in Colorado. Avalanches do not discriminate – they kill skiers and snowboarders, experts and novices. Taking risks in the backcountry can have its rewards but good judgement can minimize those risks.

Better Skiing: Fat Skis

Welcome to this edition of Better Skiing, I’m Bruce Ruff.
Have you noticed the trend? Skis are getting shorter and wider. Take a look around in any lift line. What’s with the wide skis anyway?

Top 10 Ways to Be Safe On the Mountain

  1. Be aware, ski with care. Do your part to help keep the slopes fun for everyone!

  2. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. At 10,000 feet, altitude sickness can hit hard and fast- proper hydration will help keep it at bay.

  3. Get in shape. When bodies are tired and out of shape, it’s easier to get hurt.

  4. Know “Your Responsibility Code.” Memorize the seven responsibilities at ColoradoSki.com and you could win a prize during National Skier Safety Awareness Week.

  5. Ski with a buddy. Even on a powder day!

Better Skiing: Nutrition

Welcome to this edition of Better Skiing, I’m Bruce Ruff.
Do you get cold when skiing? Sometimes what you put in your body is as important as what you put on your body. Body heat comes from what you eat. When you are active, you burn calories, and that produces heat.

Do you have a cell phone? Do you have a personal computer? How about an SUV? Then why are you still skiing that old equipment? Especially, your straight skis.

Learning to Ski & Snowboard

The snow is here, the weather is beautiful. For the month of January we’ve got some of the best conditions on record for skiing and snowboarding which makes this month a great time to get out and play in the snow. Every year at this time all of the Colorado ski resorts participate in a state wide program to get people out on the slopes for Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month. So if you have ever wanted to learn ski or know someone who does now is the time and Colorado is the place.

Better Skiing: Weather Watching

Welcome to this edition of Better Skiing, I’m Bruce Ruff.
Are you a weather watcher? I don’t mean just listening to a forecast or snow report. I’m talking about keeping an eye on the skies and what’s happening around you. The skiers who are always skiing the best snow know what I mean.

Better Skiing: Hand Position

Welcome to this edition of Better Skiing, I’m Bruce Ruff.
It doesn’t matter what type of skier you are or what type of terrain you are skiing; If you are not skiing well, check your hands. Your hands and how you use your poles determine whether or not you are skiing with a quiet upper body. You should be skiing from the hips down.
