Better Skiing: Powder Skiing

Welcome to this edition of Better Skiing, I’m Bruce Ruff.
Powder skiing for some skiers is effortless fun. If you struggle in deep snow, here are a few tips on how to enjoy it.

To ski powder you must first point your skis down the fall line with your belly button continuously facing toward the bottom of the run. Make your feet and skis act as a platform: This means they act as one unit with equal weight on both skis. If you try and place weight on the downhill ski as you would on hard packed snow, it will sink and cause you to crash. Equal weighting of both skis helps you ride higher in the snow. Do not lean back, and stand in the center of your skis. The deeper the snow the greater the resistance, the greater the resistance, the slower you’ll go. So, find a pitch that you can keep a steady rhythm on. Try not to overturn your skis where they come across the fall line. You want to make subtle turns and be light on your feet, not push a lot of snow.

I skied in 8” of powder 2 weeks ago, and had a very hard time of it. It was my first time in powder vs packed powder. Of course I weighted the downhill ski, and crashed often. I knew there had to be a big technique difference between pp and powder. How do you turn if not weighting the downhill ski, wedge it? Are there any other tips you can offer to aid a new powder skiier? Dave
