Better Skiing: Flat Light

Welcome to this edition of Better Skiing, I’m Bruce Ruff.
Flat light – those two words can wreck havoc with skiers. Everything looks white, no bumps, no rolls, and even the pitch of the run disappears. It can happen suddenly when clouds obstruct the sun or be continuous when the whole day is overcast.

Next time the light is flat, try skiing the side of the run next to the trees. If you’re in a bowl, a rock outcropping will help give definition to the run. Skiing near dark objects adds contrast and gives you better depth perception. If possible, head for the trees. When the light is flat, widen your stance just a bit for added stability. This helps keep you ready for unexpected bumps or changes in the snow. The most important thing to remember in flat light is to relax. I know, easier said than done. But if you can relax you’re more likely to absorb changes thrown at you by the mountain. Concentrate on feeling the terrain through the soles of your feet and reacting accordingly.
