Head west young man...

Fellow blogger Nick and I hit Sunlight on Monday and Powderhorn on Tuesday, and I can honestly say that I hit the jackpot. I am really starting to believe that snow just follows me around.

Two days of fairly unexpected snowfall hit the two resorts we were at.

Monday was Sunlight. We woke to dreary skies in Glenwood Springs, a sign that could mean new snow up at Sunlight, a short 15 minutes drive from our hotel. When we arrived, it was dumping snow. The 2” of new stuff they reported at 6 AM had turned into about 8+” by the time we hit the summit for our first run. It was the stuff you write about!

We took a little break at 11AM to catch the Ute Tribal blessing that was happening in the base lodge. It was a unique way to experience a lot of culture in between powder turns. We pretty much tore it up for the rest of the day, with our tour guide/marketing friend Lauren, enjoying untouched powder turn after untouched powder turn on great terrain.

After the day at Sunlight, I hit a local coffee shop to check email, and the snow report to see how much Powderhorn got. Much to my shagrin, 0” in the last 24 hours. “DOH! Oh well, it’ll be fun anyway,” I thought. As we drove further west, I called our lovely receptionist and asked her to check coloradoski.com to find out if anything fell overnight. The reply: 7” of new! Yipeeee! Another powder day! We arrived about 30 minutes later to a vision of white. We couldn’t wait to boot up and get out. We waited for Powderhorn’s marketing guru Sarah to come down from her own powder turns so she could show us the lay of the land. After a quick and fun tour of the east side of the mountain, we headed to the west lift. Good choice. We found some of the most fun, most untouched glade skiing I’ve had in years. The best part was that while we found ourselves lapping the same run over and over, we never saw another soul in there. Just us and our tracks from the last run.

Simply put, 2 epic days at 2 great resorts. It’s becoming quite clear why I took this job.
